Bring your students out to experience the farm!

Urban Roots offers age-appropriate educational field trips for groups of students from elementary school through college. Led by staff and/or Urban Roots Farm Interns, the field trips include fun, interactive educational activities that teach about:
  • farming sustainably
  • hunger issues
  • making healthy food choices
  • where our food comes from
  • a farm tour

    Possible other activities might include:

  • nature exploration
  • insect activity
  • ability / age-appropriate hands-on farm work

    Urban Roots 2009

    Interested groups must:

  • provide transportation to and from the farm for their group
  • bring adequate amount of adult supervision who will be responsible for actively participating with their students and for the discipline of the students in their group.

    Group size:

    We can accommodate as few as 10 students and as many as 60. Groups of 20-40 students work best.

    Location of the farm: Near the intersection of Bolm Rd. and Route 183, just north of the river and east of 183 (on the other side of 183 from Eastside Memorial High School). Click HERE for directions.

    Cost:

    Field Trips to the Urban Roots Farm are now free to school and youth groups for the 2011 program year, thanks to sponsorship from Wheatsville Food Co-op!!

    To inquire about scheduling a field trip, please contact Shirene. Please contact us at least a month in advance of the time you want to visit us. Requests with less notice will be considered but not guaranteed. We look forward to your visit!

    Urban Roots 2009

    Invite our youth leaders to come speak at your school

    Our high-school age farm interns work on our urban sustainable farm, learning about agriculture, community service, how to run farmers' markets, hunger in Central Texas, where food comes from, and how to work hard. They lead volunteers and middle school groups on the farm and speak in front of a wide variety of groups. With all this experience, we would like to give them the chance to share their knowledge and experience with other youth. At your invitation, we would like to bring our youth to elementary and middle schools in Austin to speak about their experience growing food and what they've learned about themselves in the process. Our youth can also speak on the importance of eating a healthy diet and act as peer role models, promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyles to your students.
