H. Grant Thomas, Jr.
Founder

Grant founded YouthLaunch in 1994 with the aim of providing effective advocacy and support for youth empowerment efforts. After many years as a senior advisor to YouthLaunch, he remains actively involved with the organization as a board member, with a particular focus on articulating systems-level models for youth empowerment strategies. Grant has been in the field of education since 1967, and has taught in a wide variety of school settings, both traditional and otherwise. His involvement with peer assistance began in 1980, when he started the PAL® (Peer Assistance and Leadership) program in Texas. Over the next 14 years, he played an instrumental role in the program's refinement and growth from a pilot effort at one Austin high school into a nationally recognized model program that has been officially endorsed by the Texas Education Agency, and is now being implemented by hundreds of school districts throughout Texas and beyond.

Grant graduated magna cum laude from Princeton and holds an Ed.M. from Harvard. He was also a full-time graduate student in the doctoral program in educational psychology at the University of Texas from 1976 until 1980, when his involvement with peer assistance began.

Grant's community involvement includes service on the Board of Directors of KIPP Austin College Prep and as the President of the Princeton Club of Austin. Since 1979, he has volunteered as the Editor of the Pecan Press, the monthly newsletter of his neighborhood association.
